The Cannes Film Festival has broken its previous record for the number of female directors in competition.

This year, four of the 24 films competing for the festival's top prize, the Palme d'Or, were directed by women.

The previous record was three female-directed films out of 24 in 2011 and 2019.

Despite the new record, women still make up less than 20% of the competition lineup.
